Are you intelligent enough to watch advertising?

Ever wonder why certain objects or topics are placed in an advertisement that seem to have no relevance to the product being sold? Most the time the advertisement is trying to use your ignorance on a topic to draw out an emotion that will shed a positive light on the product or idea being displayed. The link above is for a study done to determine the effect nature has on the population when placed in advertising. The main trend found was the less a person knows about an environmental issue or the product itself being sold, the more of an impact the advertising has on that person. There is an inverse relation to how much some one knows about a topic/product and how much the advertising will affect their judgment, so if a person knows more about a topic/product, the less of an impact the advertising will have on the person.

Basicly knowledge is power. Typically before you go purchase a product or join a group/college, you would research to know if your getting a good deal or if it’s the correct decision for you to make. That same preparation you make before making such a decision is the same preparation that can prepare you for the type of advertising that you will see.

Although it may seem like the products you are being exposed to is at random, there is still a system that advertisers use to make sure they are exposing their product to right demographic. For television, advertisers will place ads around programs that tend to draw a specific group of viewers. Online, advertisers use cookies (small piece of data sent from a website that stays on a users web browser) to track what they have viewed to determine if they fit the demographic they want to advertise to.

In summery, advertisements are there to bring a new product to your attention. However, don’t let the advertising do the desist ion making for you, use your own research to come to a conclusion on your own.

  1. I remember learning in my intro psychology course last year about the different colors and strategies used for playing with peoples natural biological make up. The use of colors and, like you stated, objects in commercials and magazine ads may seem random but affect our subconscious more than we realize. Our minds are very complex and these companies have experts on their PR and marketing teams so as to create the most effective advertisements possible. The website Psychology Today has a great article explaining the affects of colors on the mind and the dramatic influences that the indeed have. There are also expansive amounts of articles related to the effects of colors on marketing and branding. All of these may seem so minuscule but there is a lot of thought that goes into choices made by advertisers to create the most effective ad.

The psychology of advertisements is almost criminal in how they prey on the goodwill of people, granted the person is expecting something in return for their money in conjunction to the good-feels, I feel there should still be some sort of obligation of the company to move forward on that environmental issue.

Perfume commercials always leave me feeling stupid cause I feel like there’s a reason a Favio look-a-like riding a tiger while slaying a dragon is in the commercial and I don’t get it. Kinda why I stopped watching commercials, TV in general actually. They don’t mean anything anymore just to get you to buys stuff, them again, that’s the purpose. But there’s a limit to how much crazy stuff I can handle, and trust me, that’s saying something.
